Offham Cinema Saturday 7th April

The next film will be next Saturday, 7th April.  “Their Finest”     A British film released last year which not many will have heard of as it slipped under the radar as the blockbusters garnered the publicity.

“Their Finest” is set in wartime but is not so much about the war as the people in Britain who did everything they could to keep morale high. It is not a heavy drama and has many light touches – what else with Bill Nighy as an ageing and fading star!  It is 1940 in London. With the nation bowed down by war, the British ministry turns to producing propaganda films.  Realising their films could use “a woman’s touch,” the ministry hires Catrin as a scriptwriter in charge of writing the female dialogue. Although her artist husband looks down on her job, Catrin’s natural flair quickly gets her noticed by cynical, witty lead scriptwriter Buckley . Catrin and Buckley set out to make an epic feature film based on the Dunkirk rescue starring the gloriously vain, former matinee idol Ambrose Hilliard. As bombs are dropping all around them, Catrin, Buckley and their colourful cast and crew work furiously to make a film that will warm the hearts of the nation. The film ignores all the usual ways to tell WWII stories, instead tackling events from the point of view of those who were left behind at home. The storyline also mines the challenges that women faced at the time, as well as the heartache that the British had to manage by, yes, keeping calm and carrying on in the face of constant bombings and adversity. This war story is set not on the battlefields — though we do learn about them — but on the city streets and in the citizen’s inner resolve. To a person, the cast is superb and moves from drama to comedy and romance….
